What influences RHD insurance rates?
Driving an imported RHD car? Here are some things that influence insurance pricing:
Modifications
Generally speaking, modifications to your RHD vehicle can change the value and safety of your vehicle. Call us if you have questions.
Repair and replacements
Not being a domestic vehicle, repair and replacement parts for RHD cars can sometimes be tricky to find and as a result, will take longer to fix.
Different sightlines
Insurance rates for RHD car owners may cost a bit more, as drivers have to adjust to different sightlines, which can create safety issues.
Limit your mileage
We can save you money if you limit your right-hand drive car’s road time, avoid the winter and keep it stored in a safe place.
Good to know: Common questions about right-hand drive (RHD) auto insurance
Own an RHD vehicle or thinking about getting one? We get a lot of calls from people having trouble finding RHD insurance. We’re happy to say that if your RHD vehicle is legal for the road, we can insure it.
Which RHD vehicles are legal in Ontario?
Canada doesn’t allow any new RHD vehicles to be manufactured or imported. However, this ban doesn’t apply to car that are more than 15 years old.
Why is it hard to find RHD insurance?
RHD vehicles are all imported. They aren’t built for North American roads, and in many cases they don’t adhere to North American standards in terms of emissions and safety equipment.
Most insurance companies have filed rules with the Financial Services Regulatory Authority of Ontario (FSRA) to not provide insurance for RHD vehicles. But at Mitchienienien, we love all cars – and especially ones that are rare or unique – and have searched the Ontario marketplace to find solutions for our customers.
Who can get RHD insurance?
We can insure any person with an Ontario driver’s license on an RHD car. We also have access to special programs for experienced drivers who have been licensed for over 10 years with a clean driving record.
How much will my RHD insurance cost?
The cost of your RHD car insurance policy will be influenced by a few factors such as where you live, how long you’ve been licensed, your driving and insurance record, the type of vehicle and use.
For drivers who have been licensed for 10 or more years and have a clean driving record, rates start around 50% higher than what you would pay for most North American left-hand drive vehicles.
Does the country of manufacture impact my insurability?
RHD cars of British origin may have more options available for them than cars manufactured in Japan or elsewhere. We are able to insure any car that is road legal, but there are more insurance companies that will cover British vehicles such as RHD Land Rovers, Minis or Morgans.
Can I get my RHD car insured as a classic vehicle?
In some cases, your RHD vehicle may qualify for classic car insurance. The minimum requirements for this are below.
You must:
- Have a clean driving and insurance record
- Have at least one other vehicle insured for daily use
The classic car must:
- Be over 20 years old
- Not be for daily use
- Be in stock condition (no modifications)
What will be required to set up a policy?
If you are looking for collision and comprehensive coverages in addition to the legal minimum coverages, you will require a vehicle appraisal so the insurance company knows how much your ride is worth. If you are importing the car, you will need a copy of the import papers.
The insurance company will also require photos of all four sides of the vehicle, a copy of your ownership, and a photo of the VIN plate.
